Ministering: our central question
Brian’s impressionSince receiving this calling, I have felt that ministering is how we can come together as a ward family.
Question for the presidencyIs it better to address ministering directly, or to consistently teach and discuss the things that draw us closer to Jesus Christ and allow deeper conversion to lead us into genuine ministering?
On paper, teaching Christ and allowing the Spirit to lead people there feels right. In practice, being direct may also be necessary. Is the answer a sequence or combination of both?
Practical decisions
- Confirm districts, companionships, and assigned households.
- Identify companionships that are active, stalled, awkward, or potentially mismatched.
- Set the next ministering interview dates.
- Personally invite brothers instead of relying only on group announcements.
- Consider beginning interviews with: “Is there anything we can pray for?”
- Consider using quorum time for companionships to meet and make a plan.
- Decide how the presidency will model ministering first.
How do we raise the level of our stewardship?
Receiving a calling immediately caused me to put forth more effort. Do we have to wait for a calling before we rise to a higher level of service?
- Do we need a calling to serve as the Savior would?
- Do we need keys to act as He would?
- What can every covenant man do without a formal calling?
- What responsibilities properly require keys, authorization, or delegation?
- How do we create responsibility without manufacturing guilt?
- How do we help brothers see ministering as covenant discipleship rather than another assignment?
Move-ins, new members, and prospective elders
- Review recent move-ins and move-outs.
- Assign someone to personally welcome each new household.
- Review the prospective elders/member progress list and visit notes.
- Separate those who cannot be located from those who need consistent contact.
- Decide whether to restart Tuesday two-by-two visits and set the next date.
- Identify brothers who are absent, isolated, or serving outside the quorum.
People needing immediate care
- Review known emotional, marital, spiritual, employment, health, and family needs.
- For each person, identify his ministering brothers and the support needed from the presidency.
- Assign personal follow-up with an owner and date.
Callings and quorum structure
- Potential quorum teachers and informal teaching opportunities.
- Missionary-focused teaching and when to hear the ward mission plan.
- Activities coordinator and possible service coordinator.
- Review the private candidate list and decide which names fit which responsibilities.
- Determine which recommendations should be taken to the bishop.
Missionary, temple, and family-history work
- Which counselor will coordinate missionary work?
- Which counselor will coordinate temple and family-history work?
- When will the presidency hear the ward mission plan?
- How will these responsibilities connect naturally to ministering?
Presidency operating rhythm
- Set a recurring meeting day, time, frequency, location, and ending time.
- Use a standard agenda: people, move-ins, ministering, instruction, activities, missionary/temple work, and assignment follow-up.
- End every meeting with a named owner and due date for every action.
Decisions to leave with
- Our direct-and/or-indirect ministering approach for the next 30 days.
- Confirmed districts and next ministering interview dates.
- Owners for move-ins and people needing care.
- A regular presidency meeting time.
- One recurring quorum activity and owner.
- Calling recommendations to develop or take to the bishop.
- Missionary and temple/family-history counselor stewardship.
